Peter Schreier, one of the greatest tenors of our time, was born in Meissen and as a youth already appeared as soloist with the Dresden Kreuzchor. He studied singing, conducting and choir conducting at the Dresden Conservatory and in 1959, the year of his graduation, gave his debut in Beethoven's Fidelio. He has since performed with the world's leading opera houses, including Berlin, Vienna, the New York Metropolitan, La Scala Milan and Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and has regularly participated in the prestigious festivals of Bayreuth and Salzburg, where he has performed annually for the past three decades.

 

His wide repertoire includes operas, cantatas, oratorios and Lieder and he specialises in works by Bach and Mozart. Peter Schreier has received numerous prestigious awards and has recorded for international lables. In 1970 he took up conducting and since then he has emerged as a leading Bach and Mozart conductor. Peter Schreier ended his singing career in December 2005 and continues his work as a conductor. He has already conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
