Since 2005 David Robertson has been Music Director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, while continuing as Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Prior to these engagements, he was Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon and Artistic Director of that city's auditorium (2000-04), the first artist ever to hold both musical posts in Lyon.
He was also Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris (1992-2000) and resident conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony (1985-87).
He regularly appears as guest-conductor with the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, London Symphony, Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich, Orchestre de Paris, Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and many others. Equally successful in the operatic arena with over 45 operas in his repertoire, Mr. Robertson's opera house credits include the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Bavarian State Opera, Lyon Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet, Hamburg State Opera and the San Francisco Opera.
David Robertson has also devoted time throughout his career to work with students and young artists.
Born in California, Mr. Robertson was educated at London's Royal Academy of Music, where he studied horn, composition and conducting. He is the recipient of Columbia University's 2006 Ditson Conductors Award, and he and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra received the ASCAP Morton Gould Award for Innovative Programming for the 2005-06 season from the American Symphony Orchestra League. Musical America named him Conductor of the Year for 2000.
In 1997 he received the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Award, the premier prize of its kind, given to exceptionally gifted American conductors.
