Dan Moshyev redefined "wunderkind" when he unanimously won the IPO timpani position one week after his 18th birthday. In the summer before going to the army, he played in Daniel Barenboim's East-West Divan orchestra, and received the inspiration to try for the IPO position. Against 10 competitors, there was no question! "Private" Moshyev spent his first year in the orchestra between guard shifts in the IDF and rehearsals with Zubin Mehta and the IPO.
His musical family immigrated to Israel when he was 4 yeas old, and he spent his childhood in Sderot. He maintains his contact with Sderot teaching percussion to High School students in a special program funded by KeyNote, the education project of the IPO.
In addition to orchestral duties, he explores his ethnic background with a Balkan music ensemble.
