Beethoven: Piano Concerto no. 4

Dvořák: Symphony no. 7

Event Info

For the premiere of his Piano Concerto no. 4, Beethoven asked two pianists to learn the new work, but both were apprehensive and ultimately refused. The composer had been dissatisfied by a performance of his third concerto, and so Beethoven himself performed his new work, the fourth concerto, for almost two years.
Beethoven broke new ground with his fourth concerto. In his first three concertos, he emphasized structural and technical elements in the tradition of Haydn and Mozart. Here, more emotional involvement is required of the soloist; romanticism is in full effect. He surprised the audience: the soloist opens the work instead of the orchestra, a major innovation! And another innovation: as with Symphony no. 5 and his Concerto for Violin, Beethoven repeated the same notes a number of times in the opening.
