Orchestral music of Schumann

Event Info

Robert Schumann's symphonies and piano concerto contain numerous secrets relating to his turbulent life. Schumann composed many love songs and large-scale piano works devoted to his lover, and later his wife, pianist Clara Wieck. For many years they both wished to realize their love, and when this wish was finally fulfilled, Schumann’s mental illness broke through and plunged their lives into an abyss of pain and suffering. Schumann's piano concerto and symphonies express his passion, his intense love and its realization, and his erupting madness. They also evoke the folk songs, magical landscapes and spirit of time in which all his life events—reminiscent of some of the most dramatic romantic films—took place. Schumann's influence is evident in the piano concerto of the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, who regarded Schumann's music as a major source of inspiration for his own work.

Works by Schumann will be performed in January and March 2018; a work by Grieg will be performed in July 2018
