Making the new sound familiar and the familiar sound newhas been his focus since the beginning of his career. Ingo Metzmacher was General Music Director of the Staatsoper Hamburg, Chief Conductor at the Dutch National Opera, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Artistic Director of the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen in Hanover. IngoMetzmacher is a frequent guest with leading orchestras such as the Wiener Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, La Filarmonica della Scala, The Cleveland Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker and Ensemble Modern. Across the 2025/2026 season, Metzmacher leads Mahler in Palermo ("Resurrection") andCologne (SymphonyNo. 7). He explores 20th century Americana with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and partners Messiaen’s Trois Petites Liturgies with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 ("Babi Yar") in Warsaw. He returns to Opéra national de Paris for a new production of Glass’ Satyagraha. To the Salzburger Festspiele, SanCarlo, and Frankfurt, hebrings themusic of HansWerner Henze; and leads Concerts across Vienna with Wiener Symphoniker, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester, and KlangforumWien. Highlights of recent seasons include new productions of operas by Rihm, Enescu, Nono, Verdi, Henze, Strauss and Shostakovich. To date, he has led the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester on five tours across Europe. He brought together the NDR Radiophilharmonie and numerous regional choirs to perform Schönberg’s Gurre-Lieder, Berlioz’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No.8 and Bernstein’s MASS. Metzmacher’s wide-ranging discography includes live recordings of his legendary New Year’s Eve concerts in Hamburg, the world premiere of Henze’s Ninth Symphony with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Messiaen’s Eclairs sur l’Au-delà…with the Wiener Philharmonker. Most recently, he released two recordings with Ensemble Modern. This is his first appearance with the IPO.
