Japanese pianist Nobuyuki (Nobu) Tsujii, blind from birth, is regarded as one of the world’s leading pianists today. At the age of 20, he won the gold medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and has since performed in the world’s most renowned concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Tsujii is known for his virtuosic brilliance, the passion he brings to the stage, and the deep emotion he conveys to audiences.
In this recital, Tsujii will open with Beethoven’s To the Distant Beloved in Liszt’s piano arrangement – a lyrical and profound work enveloped in dazzling virtuosity. He will then perform Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23 (“Appassionata”), one of the composer’s most heroic and powerful sonatas.
After the intermission, Tsujii will bring the charm and color of classical ballet to the stage with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite in Mikhail Pletnev’s arrangement. The evening will conclude with Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7 – one of the composer’s “War Sonatas,” in which he boldly expressed his true feelings about a world in turmoil.
