Hagai Shalom

What age did you begin playing a musical instrument?
I started playing the horn when I was 10 years old in the city of Haifa.

What age did you understand that you wish to pursue a musical career?
The thought of becoming a professional musician came during my second year in the IDF (I served in the army band). There I understood that this is certainly what I would like to pursue, and it isn’t “just a hobby”.

Name an unforgettable moment with the IPO
I was privileged to be present at the farewell concert from maestro Mehta at the end of his tenure as the orchestra’s music director. The final chord of Mahler 2nd symphony, the maestro’s gestures, the musicians’ applause, the audience, the entire hall was up on their feet moved by the event, and the maestro, it was an expression of gratitude that embodied so much in it, something which words could not describe. It was really an end of an era, and the beginning of a new one.

What do you love to do off stage?
I play Frisbee with Gili Rivkin, who is a really good friend, my flat mate, and by chance, a member of the first violin section of the orchestra.

Which kind of music would we find on your playlist?
Israeli music, techno, R&B, and jazz.

Did you acquire any new skills during the pandemic?
Since everything was closed, we had to reinvent ourselves. I found myself working extra hours in the kitchen, baking and cooking. A type of extra therapy.
