Lotem Beider Ben Aharon

At what age did you begin playing a musical instrument?
I started playing when I was 3 years old, at the age of 10 I added the viola, and when I was 18 years old I decided to stick to the viola.

At what age did you understand that you wish to pursue a musical career?
When I was 16 I started my Bachelor’s studies at the Tel Aviv academy, and I realized that from there I will continue to a musical career.

Name an unforgettable moment with the IPO
In the opening of my first concert as an orchestra member, in the season’s opening night, we played the Hatikvah (as the IPO does in every new season). Playing the Hatikvah after 6 years of playing the American anthem while studying in the U.S. was such a moving moment for me. Until this day, 10 years after, I remember that moment every time we open a new season.

What do you love to do off-stage?
These days I love spending time with my two years old son. Going out to nature with him and my husband is one of our highlights.
Which kind of music would we find on your playlist?
At the moment my son and I listen a lot to the Mendelssohn Octet, to the string quintet in G Major by Brahms, and Chava Albertstein’s album – Tikiliton.

What is the special significance of the IPO to you/Why did you want to be part of the IPO?
After 6 years of studies in the U.S. I heard there was an opening for a viola position in the IPO. I couldn’t say no to the opportunity of playing in one of the best orchestras in the world, and in my homeland. I’m so glad I chose to show up at the audition, and the rest is history.

Did you acquire any new skills during the pandemic?
Yes, being a full-time mom, and it is a great skill. After a full day there’s such a great contentment and a kind of fatigue I have never experienced before (not even on intense tours with the orchestra☺)

How can we keep classical music and live performances relevant in the digital era?
Digital concerts can’t be compared to live performances. I believe that the moment we are able to perform again, the audience who is hungry for music and art will run to the concert halls.
