Tamar Deutsch – The Colton Scholarship

 

Tamar Deutsch, 22, plays with the Israeli Philharmonic in the 2023-24 season after winning an audition for the Colton Programme. In 2022 she earned her B.Mus degree (summa cum laude) from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in the Tel Aviv University where she studied cello with Prof. Hillel Zori. Tamar started her studies towards her B.Mus. degree simultaneously with her last school year. Before, she had studied for five years with the cellist Micha Haran. She started her cello studies when she was 5 years old in the class of Ella Kuperman in the Kiryat-Yam Conservatory. She has played continuously in representative chamber groups and orchestras since the age of 10. During her academic studies, Tamar participated in many solo, chamber and orchestral masterclasses and was chosen to play in the Gertler Quartet, the representative chamber group of the school. She also played in numerous other chamber groups and won the second prize in the school’s Chamber Music Competition. She played in the Buchmann-Mehta symphony orchestra, led the cello section in many projects, including under the baton of Lahav Shani in Gala concerts, and received an excellence scholarship for her activity in the orchestra. Tamar was selected several times to play in the Israeli Philharmonic as practicum. In addition, she won Dean Excellences for her achievements in her studies. Tamar achieved IDF’s Outstanding Musician status. Among her scholarships are AICF (2013-14, excellence 2019-22), GEMC (“AIMS” festival, Spain), “Summit Music Festival” (New-York) and Ronen Foundation. She won third prize in the Ministry of Education’s competition for excellent music students, second prize in “eMuse” competition, third prize in Ra’anana Music Center Cello Competition, and was a finalist in the Summit Music Festival Competition. She participated in JMC programs (Young Israeli Philharmonic, David Goldman Programme) and in masterclasses with cellists including David Geringas, Gavriel Lipkind, Matias de Oliveira Pinto, Claudio Ronco, Jeffrey Sollow, Steven Elisha, Fred Sherry, Amit Peled, Kyril Zlotnikov and Gary Hoffman in Israel, Spain, USA, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. She has performed in many recitals and concert halls. Tamar studied singing with Marie-Clair Herman, piano with Yana Levin and harmony and composition with the composer Boris Levenberg in the Kiryat-Motzkin Conservatory. As part of her high school studies, she studied English, mathematics and physics in the highest level and received the excellent student of the school prize from “ORT Israel” network. Currently, apart from her activity with the Israeli Philharmonic, she performs with ensembles in various genres, including the Zimbalista Music Factory, singers, classical and non-classical ensembles, and orchestras such as the Revolution Orchestra and Jerusalem East West Orchestra. In addition to her performing activities, she teaches cello regularly.
